How it works

From table top to hem

  1. Hands measuring with a tape

    Step 1: Measure the table

Measure straight across the table top, then decide how far the cloth should hang.

  2. Hands entering measurements

    Step 2: Enter the sizes

Add the hem and your fabric width. The calculator works out how many widths to join.

  3. A printed pattern on a table

Step 3: Join, fold and cut

Sew the widths, fold the cloth in four, pin the printed quarter on and cut once.

4 yd (3.7 m)

The centre panel is the full fabric width, so no seam crosses the table top. In metric, a 150.0 cm table with a 25.0 cm drop takes 3.6 m (3 7/8 yd).

The math

Cut size and fabric widths

cut diameter = table + 2 × drop + 2 × hem

When the cut diameter is wider than the fabric, a full width goes in the centre and narrower strips are joined on each side. Each strip only needs the length of the circle at its seam, so the side pieces are shorter.

Show the steps for the 60" example

Finished: 60" + 2 × 10" = 80". Cut: 80" + 2 × 1⁄2" = 81", radius 40 1⁄2". The centre width covers 54" minus two 1⁄2" seams; each side still needs 14 1⁄2" including its seam. Both strips come from one 62 1⁄8" length, so the total is 81" + 62 1⁄8" = 143 1⁄8", or 4 yd.

Tips

For a cloth that hangs well

  • Match the drop

About 8 in / 20 cm sits on the lap, 15 in / 38 cm is halfway, and 29–30 in / 75 cm reaches the floor.

  • Press seams open

Press the joining seams open, or flat-fell them so the cloth looks tidy from both sides.

  • Hem a curve

Use a narrow hem or bias binding. A wide hem puckers on a curve. The bias tape calculator sizes the binding.

  • Pre-wash first

Wash and press linen or cotton before you cut, since tablecloths get washed often.

Frequently asked questions

How much drop should a round tablecloth have?

8–10 in (20–25 cm) for everyday use, about 15 in (38 cm) for a dressier look, and the table height (about 29–30 in / 75 cm) to reach the floor.

Why is there no seam down the middle?

A full fabric width sits in the centre and narrower strips are joined on both sides. The seams fall toward the edge, where they hang down or sit under plates.

Can I use 108 in / 275 cm wide fabric?

Yes. Enter the wider width and the calculator tells you when the cloth fits in one piece with no seams.

Does the size include the hem?

Yes. The cut diameter adds the hem allowance all round. Set the hem to 0 if you bind the edge.

Does the PDF print at real size?

Yes. Print at 100% or Actual size and measure the test square before you tape the pages.
