How it works

Three numbers, one shopping list

  1. Hands measuring with a tape

    Step 1: Measure

Measure the rod width and the drop from the rod to where the hem should fall.

  2. Hands entering measurements

    Step 2: Enter the fabric

Add the fabric width, the fullness and the pattern repeat if there is one.

  3. Fabric being cut on a table

    Step 3: Buy and cut

Buy the total, then cut each width at the cut drop, starting at the same point in the pattern.

Buy
11 yd (10.0 m)

With a 25 1⁄4" pattern repeat the cut drop grows to 101" (4 repeats) and you buy 12 yd (11.0 m). In metric: 10.0 m (11 yd).

The math

Widths × cut drop

widths = ⌈(panel × fullness + side hems) ÷ usable width⌉

The cut drop is the drop plus header and hem, rounded up to whole repeats. The total is widths × cut drop, plus one repeat to line up the first cut.

Show the steps for the 80" example

Panel: 80" ÷ 2 = 40". Flat: 40" × 2× + 6" = 86". Widths: 86" ÷ 53" → 2 per panel, 4 total. Cut drop: 84" + 6" + 8" = 98". Total: 4 × 98" = 392".

Tips

Before you cut

  • Measure twice

Measure the drop at both ends and the middle of the window. Floors and sills are rarely level.

  • Line up the pattern

Start every width at the same motif, so the pattern runs straight across the joined panel.

  • Lining

Linings use the same widths but usually no repeat. Run the calculator again with the repeat set to 0.

  • Pleated header?

For pinch or box pleats with a printed ruler, use the curtain pleat calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What fullness should I use?

1.5× looks tailored, 2× is standard, 2.5–3× looks rich. Sheers often take 2.5× or more.

What is a pattern repeat?

It is the length after which the print starts again. Each cut drop is rounded up to whole repeats so the panels match.

Why add one extra repeat?

Your first cut rarely starts exactly at a motif. One extra repeat lets you line up the first width.

How much do header and hem add?

We start with 6" for the header and 8" for a double hem. Change both to suit your tape and style.

Does it work for blinds or a single panel?

Yes. Set panels to 1 and fullness to 1 for a flat blind, or any fullness for a single curtain.
